THE CHALLENGES FACING NOT-FOR-PROFIT BOARDS

It’s abundantly clear that not-for-profit Boards of Directors want to govern with excellence but have limited resources and time to dedicate to Board professional development.  Confronted frequently by media reports on governance failures, more and more Boards are acknowledging that governing by instinct alone doesn’t work, and are seeking to learn from those failures.

Board members want to understand the difference between governance (the Board’s job) and management (the staff’s job) and contribute to a productive and respectful partnership between the two.  They know that the Board has a critical role to play, and have the desire to position their organization as leading-edge and a vital resource to their members and/or stakeholders.

• Pre-recorded on-demand Board workshops (PowerPoint accompanied by audio) allowing Boards to build 60-120 minutes of learning into each of their meetings.  Each session comes with a facilitator’s guide, equipping one member of the Board to fuel discussion, gather appropriate information, and ultimately drive the development of new policy or the gathering of insights and information to help the Board improve their governance capacity;
• Pre-recorded on-demand Presentations (PowerPoint accompanied by audio) allowing the Board, or individual members of the Board, to enhance their knowledge about a particular governance responsibility;
• A library of Policy Discussion Guidelines, each framing a particular issue, posing questions every Board should discuss and respond to, and providing policy solutions and policy language.  Topics addressed include: Role of the Executive Committee; Financial Operating Surplus; Role of the Board Chair; Member/Stakeholder Consultation and Planning; Committees and Accountability; Board Member Conduct and Ethics; Financial Investments; and, Board Information Needs; and,
• A Not-for-Profit Governance Blog, allowing Board members from trade, professional, special interest, charitable and other not-for-profit organizations and associations to dialogue with each other and governance experts.
